A Legacy of Compassion, Dedication and Service
Mr. Elbert Higgs, founder of A&S Funeral Services, has devoted his life to caring for families across the Turks and Caicos Islands. From handcrafting wooden caskets in North Caicos to helping establish embalming services throughout the islands, his work has been guided by a lasting commitment to dignity, compassion and service.
Humble Beginnings in North Caicos
Mr. Higgs began serving his community as North Caicos’ mortician, building wooden caskets by hand and arranging traditional burials. At a time when formal mortuary facilities and preservation services were unavailable, families relied on his craftsmanship, care and steady support.
These early experiences laid the foundation for a lifetime of service and a determination to improve funeral care for his community.
A Personal Loss That Inspired a Lifelong Purpose
In 1984, the passing of his father brought the challenges facing island families painfully close to home. With no embalming services available in Bottle Creek, severe weather approaching and his siblings overseas, Mr. Higgs had to build a casket and complete his father’s burial within 24 hours.
The experience strengthened his resolve to give other families something his own had been unable to have: more time to gather, grieve and say goodbye.
Determined to make that possible, he committed himself to learning the art of embalming—a decision that would help shape the future of funeral care in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Bringing Essential Care to the Islands
Working with the Mutual Burial Association, Mr. Higgs helped establish the first morgue in Bottle Creek. The facility marked an important step forward, providing access to preservation services and allowing families more time to make funeral arrangements.
As his expertise grew, his service extended across the archipelago. He travelled between islands to care for families, becoming a trusted mortician known for his professionalism and compassion.
Before Providenciales had a morgue, families transported their loved ones by boat to North Caicos, where Mr. Higgs carried out embalming and preparation before their return for funeral services. His attention to detail, particularly his ability to preserve a natural and peaceful appearance, earned the confidence and respect of communities throughout the islands.
Passing Knowledge to the Next Generation
Mr. Higgs’s influence extends beyond the families he has served. Through mentorship and practical training, he has helped guide many of the funeral homeowners and operators serving the Turks and Caicos Islands today.
In March 2013, he entrusted leadership of A&S Funeral Services to his eldest daughter, Adelphine Higgs-Pitter, carrying his founding values into a new generation of family leadership.
Rooted in Community, Looking to the Future
Today, Mr. Higgs resides in North Caicos, where he enjoys building, fishing, farming and playing dominoes. His connection to the islands and their people remains central to his life.
He also remains actively involved in developing a dedicated funeral home facility, continuing his lifelong commitment to improving the care available to families across the Turks and Caicos Islands.
An Enduring Legacy
Mr. Elbert Higgs’s story is one of resilience, vision and compassion. What began with handcrafted caskets and a deep sense of responsibility grew into a legacy that continues to shape funeral care throughout the islands.
At A&S Funeral Services, we honour that legacy by carrying forward the principle at the heart of his work: every family deserves compassionate support, and every life deserves to be honoured with dignity.
